SOS DOCTORS were established in February 1993 in Athens.

The long-lasting stay of the Chairman of SOS DOCTORS’, George Theocharis, in Paris at the period of his specialization in the Urgent Medicine, was the reason and the inspiration for the transfer of SOS MEDECINS medical model of in Greece.

SOS MEDECINS were established in Paris in 1966 by Dr. Marcel Lascar, on the occasion of a death. A Sunday afternoon, one of his patients, who was seeking vainly for help, died alone and helpless due to a myocardial infarction.  At that moment, Dr. Marcel Lascar had the simple but brilliant idea of organizing a network of immediate medical services.

Dr. Marcel Lascar and his colleagues had already realized that the medical practice had changed. It was not possible for the doctor, due to the conditions of his work and the big distances, to find himself at the patient’s side at the time he needed him.

The organization very quickly began to expand covering incidents apart from Paris and in other 32 big cities of France. Today, it offers its services to approximately 1/3 of the country’s population.

Every year, more than 1.200.000 house calls are made in France visits, 300.000 of which in Paris.

The example of SOS MEDECINS has been emulated in other countries. Thus today SOS MEDECINS organizations operate in Brussels, Geneva and London.
