Swallowing Test (FEES)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The FEES swallowing test is an examination during which a specialized ENT doctor inspects the larynx and hypopharynx both at rest and during swallowing. For the procedure, a flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscope is used to observe the anatomical structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flexible scope is inserted through the nose after mild local anesthesia and advanced to the lower level of the pharynx, from where the cavity of the larynx and the surrounding areas can be closely examined. At the same time, swallowing trials with liquids and solid foods are performed, allowing for an immediate assessment of possible pathology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The test does not require special preparation. Thanks to local spray anesthesia, the procedure is completely painless. It is recommended to avoid food intake for at least one hour after the examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In which cases is the swallowing test recommended?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Possible indications pointing to swallowing disorders include prolonged duration of eating, changes in body posture during food intake, fear before swallowing, difficulty consuming certain substances, food remaining in the mouth, regurgitation, and coughing during or after feeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, there are indirect symptoms not directly related to eating, such as weight loss, frequent and unexplained fever, persistent cough, recurrent episodes of bronchitis or pneumonia, changes in voice or speech, and finally, the sensation of a foreign body in the throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
